Unfortunately, It’s Me.
Solo Show, Detroit Contemporary Gallery, August 6-28, 2022
I chose the name “Unfortunately, It’s Me,” not to be self-deprecating but more as a call to action. I wanted to examine the dread of facing yourself in order to grow. I mixed brand images from my childhood in metro-Detroit like Better Made chips, Big Boy restaurants, Boblo Island; to personal memories of my dad’s lunchbox and after-school television marathons to escape reality. The parody of the brands in my art create a buffer to the painful truth i’m trying to face; but can’t; sickness, loss, mendacity, insecurity, dead dreams.
